15 Sept

Had me a bit of a fright this morning. The night before, Id eaten some watermelon and as one is wont to do, id stuck a seed on my forehead bindi-style and promptly forgot all about it. Don't vive me that face. Everybody does it.

Regardless, the seed had slipped my mind and I went into dreamland with it hitching a ride on my forehead. Sometime through the night, I shook off the seed like a broncing buck and there it sat on the edge of my pillow until morning when I slowly batted one eye open to discover what I thought was a beetle staring me down. Such was my morning excitement.

My afternoon excitement began with another flat tire. KKKrap, again?, I thought. But then I shifted gears and focused on the challenge of it. Suddenly I was part of the F1 pit crew. I lived and died by 10ths of a second. First, whip off the wheel. Second, strip off the tube. Third, patch kit. Next, throw it all back together again and baaaaam, done in 4 minutes flat. Well, anything but "flat"!

The town of Arezzo was in my sights for today. It was a pleasant 40 km ride along the bike path with more of the same kinds of hardships as yesterdays ride. Todays bounty: canteloupe, gala apples and of course tomatoes.

Arezzo is a small town of elegant Renaissance palaces, fine Romanesque and Gothic churches and the charming midieval square of the old upper town. The 13th Century Duomo's clock tower presides over the Piazza Grande and its sloped brick pavement. Framed by buildings from an assortment of centuries, here was the location where one of the sweetest scenes was shot for Roberto Bellini's "Life is Beautiful".

Of course, no excursion to a town square is complete without a visit to the local Pasticceria. Bar Carraturo did not disappoint. Kickass latte and a scrumptious pastry gave me the right mix of jet fuel to send me back on my way.
